I was just looking into that for my 00 Explorer and if the extended warranty is not purchased within the 3/36000, no joy. But of course you can purchase with 3rd party companies. And they can work just as well.
When I bought my 00 EB last July, it had 39K on it, and I was able to purchase a Ford extended warranty without a problem. If you're looking at it from a dealer, then I can't see why you couldn't do the same - it's the same circumstance that I purchased mine under. If it's private party, still consider talking to the dealer - here in MA, I've seen the local dealer willing to sell a Ford warranty to me if I brought them the truck that I bought and they "certify" it for a couple hundred bucks. Worth the time/trouble/money if you like the truck but are unsure of the history. My 2-year, 24K warranty from Ford was $750. It has paid for itself with the repairs to the front end already. Good luck!
