92 Explorer Starting Problems

92 Explorer. Key in on position and everything looks like a go. Twist key to start engine and nothing. I can put key into the engine on position, remove red/lt blue wire from starter solenioid and jumper this solenoid terminal direct to positive battery post and WALA engine starts just fine.

Why isn't red/blue wire sending the pwr? What do I check next? Grounds?

Thanks for any help. I need to get kids to school tomorrow morning!!

I posted on here in reference to the exact problem with my '93, but have not gotten it figured out yet. I have torn the darn thing apart testing fuses, wiring, and even replaced the starter solenoid. Nothing worked. I am seriously thinking of pulling the steering wheel and replacing the ignition switch. It's about the only thing left I can think of.

Good luck with yours.

Have you checked the Neutral Safety switch / Clutch switch?
Auto trans has neutral safety switch, located near the transmission shift linkage, in the starter solenoid circuit.
Manual trans version has a clutch triple function switch for the same thing. Not sure where it is located.

theres a switch the clutch pedal hits on a manual. you shouldn't have to pull the wheel to change the switch it's on the column under the dash the starter wire is red/Lt blue check for 12v with key turned to crank if you got it the switch is good. if no 12v and 12v at both yellow wires switch is bad or linkage is damaged. to replace the key tumbler turn switch to on and insert a straight pick or small screwdriver in the hole directly under the key at the bottom of the collumn the whole thing should pull out. if you have an auto try starting it in nuetral instead of park. if it starts in neutral the nuetral safety switch is shot.

The neutral switch is just above the shift lever on the transmision. This also turs on the backup lights in reverse. So you might want to ceck if those still function. Manual says pink and red/light blue, though that never has been too reliable.
