I have a 95 PSD F350 with 4:10 gears and 5 speed. On the highway at 70 it turns around 2500 with 235/85r16.I am thinking about looking for a used 10.25 rear end with either a 3.73 or 3.55. I usually only tow about 5000 lbs (RV) but may tow up to 10,000. Is there a huge power loss with those high rear gears like on hills at speed. I thought about a gear vendors over/under but at 3500 its out of my range. I am trying to lower my highway RPM's and boost mileage.
Wouldn't it be less expensive to put a little taller tire on it. You won't otice much difference between the 4.10 and the 3.73. The 3.55's might be a bit tall for heavy loads, but will be fine for the little RV.
From what I have seen and heard from others with the same truck as I, you will only gain about 1mpg going to 3.73's. 3.55's were not an option on my year so i do not know on those. I think cookie88's idea on changing tire size would be the most cost effective.
I believe you can run 315's with just a little steering rub on the 3/4 tons. I don't know on a 1 ton, I would assume no rubbing due to different front suspension.
3.55s are too high if you pull heavy loads. when i haul hay i wish i had a 3.73 or 4.10 but when i can turn alittle over 2000 rpms at 70mph i can deal with it. mines a 1995 too. all stock except downpipe and staight pipe and get 20-21 boost at 3000 rpms in 5th. what about you?
Thanks all for the great info. I'm not sure if the 2002 rear ring and pinion will work. I'll check and get back with you. I may be interested. Also I run a straight pipe (6' chrome) and I do feel a power increase and besides the sound is great.
