don't know anything about D44's nor have one to compare. I know it's one or the other obviously. is this enough info? any help appreciated. I've tried searching forums, but I have prehistoric dial up. Needless to say I've spent hours, and barely got anywhere.
couldn't find any bill of material numbers for D44 in '78, but did find them for D60. didn't match any of the D60 numbers for that year. Three bolts in a row on the steering arm. think you guys hit it on the head, must be a 44. since the tubes and hub are so big, you think it's an HD? thanks for your help, love this site! Now I'm gonna search these forums trying to figure out why my 2000 powerstroke's frontend sounds like a rattle can. looks like I'm replacing the frnt left hub assembly AGAIN! stupid sealed bearings .
Muscletruck, HO is talking about the kingpin caps on top of the steering knuckles. Most Dana 44's I have seen have balljoints. Dana 30's have 3-bolt kingpin caps. Dana 60's can have balljoints or kingpins, depending on year ('91-down are kingpin, '92-up are balljoint, on F350's).
get a 1/2 inch wrench and a 9/16 inch wrench, which one fits the cover bolts? if the 1/2 incher fits its a 44. 9/16 incher its a 60. I got the same axle the 44-9f its a d44
