I have a 91 5.8l auto F150 with 145,000 miles. What is acceptable rotor backlash and how much up and down play is allowed?
I running out of options why it is spitting and sputtering when under load in mid RPM's. I noticed some movement with the rotor and am going to put a gauge on it and measure once I know the specs.
Im not sure about the specs on those. I imagine that up and down play probably isnt the important issue there, but the problem could also be a stretched out timing chain causing the cam and rotor to run out of time. Put a socket and ratchet on the balancer pulley bolt and rotate the crank while watching the dist rotor to see if it is slow to get moving when the crank is turned. I had that happen on a 454. I thought the distributor gear was worn out and it was a little worn but a new dist didnt solve anything. A new timing set put it back in business.
Remove it and take it to a parts store for testing. It is usually free. It may take a special little stubby hex driver wrench to remove it from the side of the distributor. I think you have a TFI ignition module in your year but I can't be sure. My full size books only go up to 86.
I spent 6 long hours standing in the rain on the side of the road replacing EVERYTHING but the ignition module because the little testing computer at Discount Auto Parts said my module was fine.
hey kwebb i also am from iowa where in iowa are u at? and my truck just started doing the same thing not to long ago. it feels like i'm running out of gas. it sounds like a muffled backfire. i'm ****ed and don't know what it is. i thought the same thing about my cap moving when i parked at the gas station.
About 1/2 hour from DesMoines.
I'm actually now wondering if about the timing chain. With 144,000 mi I guess about anything is possible. Hopefully this weekend I can work on it.
