I have replaced cap, rotor, pcv, EGR valve, and ignition module.I have alos cleaned the throttle body and the IACV. Triple checked the ignition wires to make sure they were all connected correctly.Disconnected battery for 15-20 min. to clear codes. Started it for a few minutes in the garage. It idled rough, but there were no codes and no check engine light. I figured the computer just needed time to get its bearings, so I drove it about 2 miles. The idle smoothed out a little, but when I got it home I checked codes again and got a continuous code of 62. According to fordfuelinjection.com, this is for a Converter clutch error with e4od , which is what I have.
Symptoms are rough idle, no power, and it seems to bog if I try to accelerate at a "normal" rate. It will also come close to stalling at idle, then suddenly rpms will go up and it will smoooth out for a while.
I need some help from the Ford Brain Trust. Any ideas ?
I would check the throttle position sensor to see what kind of readings it is sending the computer. It could be erratic or give a wrong reading at idle which will throw the computer off and make the truck run bad.
It really sounds like a vacuum leak.
With the engine running, spray carb cleaner or WD-40 around the joint between the upper and lower intakes, and around the throttle body gasket. Try using a pair of vise-grips to pinch the vacuum line to the brake booster as well. Pull the PCV valve and plug it. Have you checked the fuel pressure yet?

Hey Six Thanks for the input. Didn't get to check the fuel pressure today, but I will try those suggestions tomorrow. I changed trans filter yesterday, replaced about 7 qt trans fluid. Did not drain converter. This morning I zeroed the codes, warmed it up, drove it about 5-6 miles, and no codes at all. I think it is a vac leak or fuel pressure problem. I will advise when I get it.
I checked codes several times, got several transmission codes and a spout signal default code. Replaced the wires, cap, rotor, PCV valve, ignition module/TFI, air and breather filters, EGR valve, change trans filter and fluid AND flushed the transmission. It improved some, but only some.
I was looking at a bad fuel pump, or a vac leak, and I saw on this board both a trend in these engines to have vac leaks around the intake manifoild and throttle body, AND a simple cheap test.
I sprayed starting fluid around the intake halves, and nothing. I sprayed it around the throttle body seam and GOLD !!!!
I hour and a $1.99 Fel-Pro gasket later and it runs fantastic ! Thans to Bob, LxMan, ESPNCSU, and others for the help.
