Gonna get some more power. Which products to buy?

I'm gonna get a tymar, autometer guages and new exhaust for my 99 psd but don't really know squat about the exhaust. What is the size of the stock exhaust? I've priced a complete 4" turbo back setup from a local shop for $600 installed. That includes drilling and tapping the existing exhaust pre turbo for the egt guage. Is a 4" big enough or should I get bigger? Is there much to be gained from going to 5"? I will be chipping it when the mods are done so with that in mind will the 5" make a signifigant difference in egt? Also should I delete the muffler?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

4" will do just fine for what you are planning, 5" is only really needed if you're going to get extreme with the truck. I'm planning to delete the muffler on mine too, I don't think they sound bad but some guys don't like the sound it makes.

At no point will a 5" exhaust become neccessary. A full 4" can support around 500HP. A 5" will up the cool factor a few points.

Personally, I love the sound of my straightpiped exhaust, but with a long bed crew the tip is waaaaaaaay back there, so I really don't get much flutter. There will not be a noticeable difference between the two unless you've chosen a crappy muffler.

Great! Thanks for the responses guys. I have a LB CC too and I don't mind the flutter on the rigs I've heard without a muffler anyway. Not interested in the cool factor myself. Don't want a culvert under the truck anyway. I just want to be able to chip it up 110 to 125 hp if possible without getting the egt's too high. It will have a guage though so I will keep it under control.

Cookie,

What coolant do you run? I've been doing some research and the Evans seems ok but a pain to change over to. I have been thinking about the gold with the addative already in it. What are your thoughts?

If you had green from the factory, you must stay with green. Even with a pressure flush, gold and green are not to be mixed.

Actually I talked with the diesel tech here at the local dealership and he told me that if I flush it several times and get all traces of the green out it wouldn't be a problem using the gold in my 99. He even told me that I would have no warranty issues. He in fact personally assured me of this. The thing he kept mentioning was that I would not be able to get the green out just by draining it and after telling him about my plans to repeatedly drain and refill with water until there was no trace of green in it he said that should work fine. He said if there's any green in there then it has to be treated like it has the green in it so be absolutely sure there's no green tint at all to the last few drains before putting the gold in.

It seems to me that I read on the vavoline site that a small amount (trace) would not hurt
