93 running good only 60,000 miles. It starts good and sounds smooth until you start driving i can hear occasional ping when stepping on the gas. It has done this since i bought it new, but now its worse. The ford dealer told me when the van was new that it was the gas air mix and that it was set at the right point. 10 years later it is starting to get worse. Would changing the spark plugs fix this?
Is it a 3.0L? If so, pinging is a pretty common occurrence with the engines. Check out the 3.0L forum if you want to see how common. I had it too for a while, but switched to a 180* thermostat and did a good cleaning of the top end, and reattached the multiple vacuum lines that had popped off, and the pinging went away.
Are you losing transmission fluid mysteriously? If so, the modulator valve on the transmission is leaking fluid into the engine. That would cause it to ping like crazy. Otherwise, occasional pinging is normal with the 3.0L.
its the 3.oL and it pings slightly more after it warms up and only when its in motion. I am not losing any fluid. I have changed the spark plugs and gas filter and i will get to the injectors next. Is the idea of putting a litre of diesel in a warm engine oil compartment for 10 minutes a good way of cleaning, followed by a clean oil change?
the 90 3.0 that i have now does not ever ping and i use the cheepest gas i can buy in it. i know this is a fluke because alot of them do ping but it makes me beleive that it must be possable to make one not ping if ya only knew what really caused them to do it. this is the main reason i bought this van because is it runs so dam good. it has 96k on it and does use some oil, like a quart every 800miles. all thats ever been done to the running of it is the spark plugs, oil change and air cleaner. it gets 17mpg town and up to 25mpg hyway
