Question Is my truck common?

I haven't seen another one like it and was wondering if it is rare or just not common in my area. (excluding the fact it doesn't have the right bed) How many were produced?

62, There just were not many 4X4s at all back then. The attitude towards 4X4s has completely changed, just like pickups. My father wouldn't drive his pickups to town to buy grocerys and never to church.

None of my books show production numbers for the '62 F-250 4x4 (I believe those records were destroyed in a fire). They do however list 1961, and 1963 F-250 4x4's, if that might help give you a range.

1961 F-250 4x4 pickup...........1,820
1963 F-250 4x4 pickup...........2,700

The 1957-60 style bed is the "correct" bed for 1961-65 F-100 4x4's, 1961-1966 F-250 4x4's, and 1966 F-100 4x4 with the shorter of the long wheelbases.

1964 F-250 4x4 pickup............3,260

Production # Sources:

"Ford pickups 1957-67" by Paul G. McLaughlin
"Standard catalog of light duty trucks" by Krause publications.

What makes you think you have the wrong bed?

If you have a 57 to 60 style bed it is 100% correct for a F250 1961 to 1966

Any other is incorrect.

The reason you didn't see people driving trucks to the store and to church in the old days is because trucks were actually used for work back then instead of to get soccer moms and yuppies with money around town. I'd say at least 80% of people that drive trucks on a regular basis don't actually work their trucks these days and that's why there's such a difference. Not to mention the fact that they don't build them like they used to. My dad has told me a story on numerous occasions of being with his dad in his 58 Chevy Apache (his personal company truck for the electric company he used to own/operate) and my grandfather running over a dead tree and keeping on moving. Try that with a truck of any make and model these days and it would probably kill you.

Is it rare? yeah. not meany 4x4's back in the day. 4x4 wasn't realy a sport yet, so generaly the only people who had 4x4's needed them all the time.

But if your bed doesn't match the cab, then it's 100% the right bed.

How rare is a 62 f250 with a 64 front clip and an 80's bed? I'd say PRETTY RARE!

Looking at your photo, it seems you do in fact have the wrong bed. It appears to be an 80s flareside short bed. While flaresides were available for this year and model, they were long beds, and yours does not appear to be an original flareside bed. Is it possible the frame was shortened? The grille and hoodside emblem also appear to be from 1964. Check your vin and wheel base to see if it is an original 4x4 and possibly a 64 and not a 62. It looks like a nice truck none the less.

That is a 80's Model bed. I had a 1986 4x4 f-150 that had the same bed. Your truck is very rare but by no means original. However I will say I like that truck. It looks better that most mods I have seen.

Accoding to the vin the truck was manufactured in july of '61and did come form the factory a 4x4 shortbed. I didn't know the hood was not '62, just liked the truck.

If I'm not mistaken, the hood should be more or less the same on all the 61-66 trucks. The only things that changed on the front clip was the grill and I believe the addition of hood side emblems starting in 63'. Correct me on any of this if I'm wrong but the hood should pretty much be the same.

The hoods were the same from 61-66 including Unibody trucks. The difference is in the trim application. Your truck has what appears to me to be a chrome emblem from a 66 twin I-Beam without the red plastic insert. Mighty fine looking old Ford! Welcome to FTE!
