timing problem..

timing problem..

motors a 97 460.. i recently replaced plugs and cap and rotor.. also had a oil leak beside the distributer so pulled it out and replaced the o ring.. wasnt the leak.. but then i got the timing all messed.. so got out my timing light and my timing tab is gone....so i played with it till i knocks.. then backed it off till it stopped.. then turned it all the way the other way then it has a very bad studder below 2000rpm.. i got it so theres no studder.. but doing that i got a little bit of ping when i step on it.. even tho i got 94 octane in the truck.. so wut im asking is how can i have it so theres no ping and no studder... ?? doens't make sence, also if this means anything.. when i start it up it makes a loud ticking noise for 30 seconds then goes away.... is that the knock senser?? well iv asked 2 questions already.. mine as well add my last question.. my idle is stuck at 900-1000 rpm.. the motor is EFI.. but how do u adjust idle on these computers??? thanx for any replys

Did you mark your distributor's location when you removed it so it could be re-installed in the same location?

Or did you put the engine to TDC on the #1 cylinder and install the distributor with the rotor pointing to the number cylinder on the distributor cap?

i put it in exactly the way i took it out.. i have made that mistake before and had to find TDC.. but not with this motor...

Did you remove the spout connector when setting your base timing?
