I am looking to buy a winch in the very near future. However, I have no clue what size to get. I have a 93 F250 SC long box 4x4. It is a heavy truck to say the least. Between my gear and myself, there is an additional 500+/- pounds there. I am not concerned about what brand to get at this point. That will come after I find out what size I need. I don't plan on going on too many trails. The length of my truck limits that. On the other hand...MUD!!!!!!! If there is possibly a formula or something, that would work as well. Although I have not done so yet, I do have access to truck scales. These scales may not register a weight this small. Don't know. My truck has a 351 with the E4OD. Any help would be much appreciated.
the milemarker E12000 would work well. I imagine that your truck is 8000 pounds.. with a ****** block, you would have a pull of 24K pounds.. with winches, there is no such thing as too much pull...
i agree, but even with light wheeling like you said you might even be able to get away with a 9000lb and a snach block for sticky situations. the common formula is 1 and 1/2 times your trucks total wieght.
here is just about anything you ever wanna know about winches! they have all the formulas and even miltary field manuals (HOOAH!) so have fun diggin.....you'd be surprised at how much info there really is!
Oddly enough, the current issue of Four Wheeler (March 2004) has an article on advanced use of vehichle recovery with winches. It gets into math and angles. I had about written the mag of as wussy pandering to new vehicle idiots and they actually put an old Ford on the cover and have an article about beefing up TTB and wenching . . . er, I mean winching.
