My '99, 3.0, 4WD, ext. cab is a great truck!! Except for the extreme wind noise above the driver side door. I have checked for door alignment and seals, and even added an additional weather strip along the upper side of door which help a little (very little). Has anyone else experinced this problem.
I need to turn the radio volume way up when driving into the wind.
Yup, as far as I know its a ranger thing. My feeling is that ford put quit a bit of money into the driveline but its still an economy truck in other area's. If I every get around to it I'de like to add some dynamat insulation or something similair to the doors, roof and floor. IMHO it will make a big differance and personally that's were ford skimped out.
My 97 Ranger doesn't have wind noise. I lubricate the door gaskets every year with tune-up silicone. It takes me 10 minutes per door to rub the silicone in real good.
If you try it, you may want to wipe off the excess the next day.
Another trick is to take a piece of paper and close the door on it. If you can pull it out easily then you need to adjust the door in slightly or take other measures to get a decent door seal. If the paper resists being pulled out then you propably are tight enough. Try moving the paper around the door to check total fit. When all is said and done apply some silicon and your wind noise should be reduced. I agree with phatpharm that Ford has sort of skimped on some items to keep the vehicle at a certain price point. Oh well!
I had a 94 ranger and the door would freez closed when slush would get on it and in the morning you could not open the door.
I replaced outside latch twice.
My 98 will not freez closed and lookin at the door I see the 94 has 2 seals and the 98 has one and in cross winds the 98 leaks
Thanks for all the comments... I did smear Vasiline along the gasket and closed the door to see if the gasket was making contact with the door. The contact was light in a couple of spots. This is where I attached the additional weather strip on the door. This seemed to help a little but the wind noise is very evident when driving into the wind. I have driven several Rangers that did not have this problem.
