Angry Merc 5.0 V8 (Mtnr), Cylinder Misfire

I have a 1998 Merc Mountaineer, and I was having cylinder misfires on #3, the vehicle was running very rough, primarily under load, but at idle too. I took the vehicle to 2 different places that gave me the same diag: Plugs and Wires.

Frustrating enough was the cost of these items, and labor, since they are not very accessible for the layman.

However, even after that - - I still have the same problem, running rough, and it set the code again.

Any ideas? Looking at other posts I was wondering if the EGR valve would cause this? The guy at the shop where I had it done said he thought I have an exaust leak. Would that cause it? Could it be the coil packs? Do they go bad for just one cylinder? What about the head gasket(s)?
