i have a 71 4x4 f100 and the other day i took it for a spin and i got home and shut it off and got out and was walkin by my hood and i heard this sould so i poped the hood and i saw that my battery was like spilling fluid out like the water holes and i made a new battery tray with primer and the paint is gone now. So i thought it was the battery returnd it got a new one and its still doin it, i was wonderin if it was my voltage regulator i pulled the cover off and it looked brand new. its like it keep chargin the battery after it is full. but the battery keeps cranking good everytime, any ideas?? thanks guys i would have a truck that would sit if it wasnt for you guys, but im learning only being 16. In every auto class i can be right now THANKS
Fluid in battery should only come to the bottom of the split ring; don't overfill or the hydrgoen gas will push it out vents. Check battery voltage with truck running. Alternator should be charging at 13.5 to 14.5 volts. If higher; replace voltage regulator; contacts may be stuck. Also have alternator tested. Watch yourself; skin and eyes, around that sulfuric acid. Overcharging will produce excess hydrogen gas; very flammable. No smoking, sparks and good ventilation. Battery, at rest (engine not running), full charge should be 12.45 to 12.65 volts. Wipe up spills and neutralize with baking soda solution. Do not get baking soda into battery.
