Question Has anyone replaced a fuel pump ?

My 1993 E150 conversion van just passed the 200k mile mark. I have had no problems with this vehicle ever, I have used slick 50 in the past , but for the last 3 years have used ZMax every 6 months. Anyway... the van just died out one night while driving home and using the Hayes manual have isolated the problem to the fuel pump. Fuse, Inertia Switch and Fuel Relay Switch have all checked out. I am down to having to pull the fuel tank to check if there is an electrical problem. The strap nuts where rusted on so I have ordered new straps from Ford. Has anyone done this, am I missing something ?

can you hear the pump "whine" when you key on?
Are you sure its not the TFI module?

TFI=thick film ignition module. a high failure rate device.
but the lack of the fuel pump whine is a good indicator of non-operation. When you did your troubleshooting, I assume you found the proper voltages at the pump power leads?

as a secondary check you could apply 12 volts to the pump leads just to make sure it is truly dead. I would not want to pull the tank either. Fact, my second fuel tank is DOA and its been that way for a year. ONE of these days I'll yank it and replace the pump.....

did you get the codes from the computer? that would eliminate the TFI.

My '95 Clubwagon just past the 220,000 mile mark last month. The fuel pump went at about 160K miles. No warning, it just wouldn't start when I got back in it from the grocery store.

Dropping the tank is a pain, especially if its still full. Mine has the 30+ gallon tank so I pulled the line loose at the fuel filter and used compressed air through the filler neck to pump the fuel out into several gas cans.

Be sure to inspect (and more than likely replace) the filler neck and vent hoses while you have the tank out. Mine were cracking and showed some signs of small leaks. A new filler neck hose is about $60 from the dealer.

Hey there Mustang 5.0 or anyone else with the knowledge of this TFI module. I've been reading through the forums looking for similar situations and this one may have scratched the surface. My '86 E-150 (5.0) has been stalling lately and it has been getting harder and harder to restart. I usually have to end up recharging the battery before I can get it going again. Anyway, I did the first thing that came to mind and replaced the electronic fuel pump in the tank. However, since then I can get it to crank at all. Either I'm doing something wrong with the prime or... it may be another animal altogether. Mustang 5.0 touched on a TFI module with exceptional failure rate. My question is, "If I replace this, and it is not the problem, what other devices are involved woth gettin fuel to the injection system?" Thanks for your help, in advance. I love this site.

Lots of things. You need to do some basic troubleshooting. check spark, then fuel. dual tanks? try starting with both tanks. EFI? Any codes? is the fuel line pressurized? injectors clicking?

so many different things could be the cause. INCLUDING a bad gear on the end of the distributor! I had one of those.... Easter egging can be expensive....

Question More Q's for Mustang 5.0

Ok, thanks for your first reply. I have checked the fuel line all the way up and the gas is pumping. Next, I checked for a spark at the plugs--none. I went on to the coil---none. Even though I replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor about a year and half ago, I went ahead and replaced just the coil, cap, and rotor this time. Now, still, I'm not getting a spark at the plugs but, I am getting voltage out of the coil. I'm confused.... what could be wrong here? My meter was reading 13 volts out of the coil plug and at the positve wire to the coil with my neg. probe on the battery neg. but, when I would put my neg. probe on the neg. wire to the coil and the positive probe back on the positive wire to the cable I got erronneous readings. Is there something interrupting the coil voltage or possibly something interrupting the output under the distributor cap? Please help. I'm trying not to Easter Egg, as you put it, I can't afford that or a mechanic right now, that's why I have to keep trying some of the easier DIY type troubleshooting methods. I'm thinking it must be something in the electronic nature but, I don't know what else to look for. Thanks again, in advance, for yours or anybody's input. Oh, by the way, we're talking about an '86 E-150 5.0 liter 302 V8. Have a great day... or night.

Sorry for the delay. I was out of town.

Is the vehicle a EFI with the ECC computer?

if so, lets start with a dump from the computer. If you have never gotten the codes, here is a primer/how to. Report back with the codes.
