MSD 6A ignition on 84 F-250/460

what does a new ignition really do and would this be a good investment for a little more power and a little tiny better gas mileage? i need new wires anyway, so i was thinking and looking at the diagrams and they dont seem hard to install at all, on top of that i had to buy a new coil today and its an MSD blaster coil.

does this override the ford electronic ignition?

The MSD 5 series is nothing more than a electronic ignition where the coil is fired much like an OEM ignition, with a switching transistor.

The MSD 6 series is a CD or capacitive discharge system. This system uses energy stored in capacitors to fire the coil, giving a much stronger spark. And also, at low rpms, they use this system to fire the plug more than once(MSD= Multiple Spark Discharge).

So there are advantages to using one of these systems, if you are going to push your engine beyond stock limits, or modify it to require the hotter spark. With the high output ignition, better sparkplug wires are recommended along with a little bit wider sparkplug gaps to take advantage of the hotter spark.

If you want a good performing ignition to fire a mildly modified engine, the stock electronic ignition will work fine.

The 6A is supposed to be able to fire a lean mixture more reliably.

I put the whole package on my 80 bronco,coil,dist,6A ,tack adapter.Fuel economy not noticable.Alot stronger pull through rpm ranges though.I just got tired of the"magic box"replacement.Took me about three hours to put it all in.easy upgrade.

yeah, you probably wont notice a difference in mileage but the performance is there... by the way...

do new wires help the OEM ignition fire any easier or should you not even waste your time? - i figure those wires have been there since 84...

New plug wires won't do anything unless the old ones are leaking.
