But it did it with the old pump and now the new one. What are the chances of it doing this twice?

OK, i missed the part about 2 pumps. how about a partially plugged radiator??this will let coolant from the engine into the radiator through the top hose, but not enough through to the bottom hose to cool the engine properly. then when you shut it down, the pressure equalizes and it does not spit out the cap anymore when cold. you should see if there is a radiator shop nearby that can flow test the radiator and cooling system.

It's a very common problem
DING! DING! DING! We have a winner!

Mom was driving home ther other day and noticed the van was blowing smoke out the exhaust. She was almost home so she pulled into the driveway and shut it off. My dad started it later and it was still smoking. Guess the head gaskets are totally gone.

My dad is not sure if he wants to fix them or just replace the whole engine. It has around 220,000 KILOMETRES on it. Van is in rough shape. Not really worth fixing up.

I would wager it's toast unless you really love the machine. A compression/pressure test would have probably revealed the blown gaskets.

Yep. Well, my dad is the type of guy to drive it until it breaks. Now he has to either fix it or buy a new vehicle.

Just an update: he ended up taking the van to the junkyard about 2 weeks after my previous post.
