Disable A4wd on 2001 Expedition 4x4?
#121
I really need help
I have a 2001 Ford expedition and I was taking my 5 year old to see Santa. I was backing into the parking space and the truck stalled out. When I started it back the 4 wheele drive was engaged and wont disengage. I have replaced the fuce, reset the computer, and checked all the wires. Please help me. Once I get it disengaged I want to know how to cut the system. I live with A LOT of sand no snow. If you can help please email me at jmeekins123@gmail.com

I have a 1998 Expedition EB 5.4 with nearly 301,000 miles...original owner...I have managed to troubleshoot lots of problems(transmission E40Doriginal(slippage...accumulator valve body spring replacement, got rid of airbags with torsion bars...7's and rancho's)....The truck when in A4WD ...works. however, it seems to be running like it was in 4H. Even parked or slowly pulling out of a spot it acts as though in 4H....the turning of the wheel is a sign and I have had it up on a lift(all 4 wheels spin)...it will easily switch out to 2H. There are no blinking lights. I have the FordTechService sheets for the transfer case operation. The inputs to the A4WD include the front and rear speed sensors(Hall) and output includes solid state clutch relay(GEM?)....The question.... The truck functions well in 4H and 4L....no other issues. I'm leaning to the GEM as being the issue.....wouldn't the A4WD light blink if it was a bad speed sensor. But then I was thinking....maybe there is corrosion or some bridge between contact points in the speed sensor and the speed sensor is 'live' the entire time and the GEM is acting upon the signal to the front clutch pack(transfer case).

Thanks Alloro...I was hoping you would respond to my post...in my search I have come across numerous posts that you have responded to and have provided a much appreciated solution/remedy. So before I pulled fuse #17(Power Distribution Box) 30A...Shift on the Fly Relay, Transfer Case Shift Relay......I made sure when 'crawling' in Reverse and in A4WD the trucks steering felt as though it was in 4WD...it was. Then I pulled fuse#17...the A4WD light started to flash/blink...and there was no steering input(turning the wheel while puling back in reverse) that would indicate the truck was in 4WD...just 2WD. Truck would not go into 4Hi or 4Lo and there was no light on the dash that appeared....I assume you were trying to rule out a mechanical issue. Thanks Again!

Actually just the opposite, I was trying to rule out if the forward clutch in the transfer case was locked due to it being energized. Pulling fuse 17, among other things, kills power to the clutch and should release power from the front driveshaft. If it still binds like it's in 4WD with fuse 17 out then I would say it's a mechanical issue inside the transfer case.

That is correct, if the clutch releases when the fuse is pulled then the issue is with the controls, most likely the 4WD module/relays.
