Could anyone please tell me what would be needed to change the gears from a '85 f150 to a '90 f150. From everything I read in the mitchell books, it looks like just the exciter gear on the rear end so that the speedometer and abs work. Is that is all that is needed? This is 4x4 so I also need to change the front section out also.
I assume you're talking about the pinion gears. The 90' came with an 8.8 axle...and if I'm not mistaken the 85 had a 9"....unless it was swapped. What axle are you working with?
84 was when the 8.8 started hitting the trucks. which the 9" still could be had. i fine more 8.8's in the 84-86 year models than a 9" so your odds are good it's a 8.8 in the 85.
If the rear ends are the same, I have to call the guy with the truck, all I should have to do is put the pinion and ring gear form the '85 into the '90. It all should match up. Correct???
If you know how to changes gears then it may sound that simple. If you have never shimmed or set the preload on the pinion bearing and set backlash then you must understand how to do this or you will have a very short lived rear end. It may also be very noisy.
At this point taking used gears and installing them in another axle you may be better off with a new set with all the pieces for the installation.
Where can I find out how to set the preload and backlash to swap 4.10 rear ring/pinion to 3.50?
