Shocks on a 2000 Explorer

If the problem is truly the shocks, not the springs, then go ahead and replace the shocks. In general, shocks should last at least 50,000 miles. To check the shocks bounce the truck a few times by pushing on the bumper. Let go and count how many times the truck continues to bounce. If it is more than one then your shocks are starting to go. More than 2 or 3 and they are pretty worthless. Assuming you mean that a Mack truck like ride is a very still ride then it is likely not your shocks. Bad shocks cause the vehicle to bounce a lot, not be stiff. Stiffness is caused by springs, shocks reduce rebound.
