Wicked Exhaust Sounds

I have had a very perverted idea, and hope someone out there can help me out. A number of years ago, I got my CDL, and learned to drive in a 1978 International Wrecker with a 6-71 Detroit and a 10 speed Eaton/Fuller Roadranger transmission. I've always been facinated by the sounds of the old Detroits, and was wondering if there were any way to make my 4.9 sould like a 6-71 through the exhaust? I figure that if the engine runs to 3,800 rpms, then it'd be possible to make it sound like a 2 stroke 6-71 at 1,900 rpms. Combine that with a slightly less manly 6 speed box, and I could get a tingling sensation in my spine all over again. Few things make you feel more manly than making a 6-71 sing while executing a series of perfect doubleclutch shifts up the range. Whooah!

I wouldn't know a Detroit diesel if it hit me in the head, but my truck has some definite diesel sound to it. More than once I've been asked how I got a Cummins in an F150. My exhaust is Hedman headers, not cats, and a single 3" pipe into a 40 series Flowmaster. Lots of work, but good results.

my sisters 73 sounded like a detroit, but that was with a rusty- half there exaust system and a blown headgasket, so...nevermind. probably not good for power

Theres only one thing to do. Rip every thing off! then new headrs (high flow) and straight pipe it back from there with 3inch pipe. Thats about as loud as you can get. Glass packs just muffle the sound and make the truck sound like a honda civic. Not a good thing for a godly 4.9 ford.

I have a glasspack right behind the down pipe going into a 4ish foot 2.5 inch stack behind the cab. I swear it sounds darn close to a diesel.

Sounding like a diesel is not enough. I want to sound just like a 6-71 detroit. Propably can't happen now that I think of it because I won't have that roots blower sound going on along with that manly yet Ferrari-like V12 bellow to the exhaust. If I can do that without being overly loud, that's fine. Loud is just noise. I want tone and sound... mechanical melody, I suppose. Somebody has to know that distinctive sound, that no other diesel makes. In a forum like this, of blatent inline six lovers, someone must know the spine tingling and unique sound of propably the greatest sounding inline six of all time, gas, diesel, or otherwise! However, getting that sound from the greatest gasoline inline six of all time might be a bit more challenging. Thanks for all the replies, I'm still open to any other suggestions.
