How many horsies does the 460 put out?
Yall, forgive my ignorance but I am fairly new to Ford trucks.
I want to know how much horsepower a stock is put out by 1986 460 motor and Holley 750cfm carb on top. BTW, it has about 26,000 miles on it and seems to be in good shape as far as I can tell. Any clue to the torque rating?
Thanks yall.

OK, so replacing the timing gears(Same function as a timing chain?) with the pre 72 ones from a 460 it will give a big boost to the HP. I imagine this isn't the easiest thing to do, is it? Would it probably hurt or help the fuel efficiency? Also, would this probably be a junkyard part or better to buy new? Any other drawbacks to doing this? Thank you all very much for your help.

I wouldn't use a junkyard timing set myself.
Yes, you have to remove the integral front cover and the crankshaft pulley. Both can be a b*tch if they haven't been off in a long time. It's not uncommon for the water pump bolts to shear or strip, as the front cover is aluminum.
Putting in the pre-'72 set restores the engine to pre-smog cam timing.
Another easy way to boost the HP is to install '68 - '71 high compression heads.
So far, this is all bolt on. You can also change the cam fairly easily if the heads and front cover are off.

Alrighty then, I thought it was going to be something pretty involved to replace that stuff. I'll be taking a few automechanics classes in school and this might just be a good project for me to do with a good instructor around to make sure I don't really screw this otherwise good truck. I imagine it would be best to replace the heads, timing gears, and cam at the same time right?
It just amazes me that Ford would produce a 460ci engine that only gets 245HP and puts it in a truck that together get 10mpg on the highway from the factory.(The 92 C-1500 with 350 I drove before put out that much HP!)
So aproxamatly what was the HP output of the pre-72 460's?
Thanks again.

My 1969 Chilton's shows that a '68-69 460 made 365 HP and 500 ft/lbs of torque. This was measured at the flywheel with no accessories on the engine.
In 1972 (the same year that smog really kicked in, with retarded cam timing and lower compression) they also began using a different method of measuring HP that made the numbers really fall.
