My 66 2wdr F100 makes a popping noise when cornering, especially when turning sharply. The noise sounds like its coming from the front springs. It's a bit un-nerving to hear as you are making a turn. The kingpins, axel pivots, radius arm bushings, front shocks have all been replaced. I don't recall if it made this noise before the pivots/radius bushings were replaced with poly bushings. Anyone have this problem or a solution???
thanks cajunbull61
Try the balljoints
May need replaced or greased
I noticed you said front springs
Do you mean coil springs or leaf springs?
Because 66's didnt have leaf springs.
Wondering if you converted something
After I did my disc brake swap, the springs would make "sproing" noises every so often. Seems to have gone away with subsequent driving. My guess is they moved out of their normal position in the perch a bit and had to find their way back in. Is this maybe what you're hearing?
My guess -- your tires are rubbing on something. Turn max to the offending side, without the vehicle lifted, and look and feel aroung in the tires. There is a stop adjustment on the axel that determines the max degree of turn that you can get.
Have you put on larger, wider tires? Do a disc spindle swap? Both will effect tire clearances.
As to ball joints -- I think andysutt means tie rod ends. But sounds like they are new, so I doubt that.
Try loosening the pivot bolts and radius arm nuts with the weight of the vehicle on the suspenshion. Not hanging loose like on a jack. Spray lots of WD-40 or some such liquid on the pivots and bushings, tighten the bolts and nuts. Sometimes people tighten up these parts with the I-beams hanging loose, then when the weight of the vehicle comes on the bushings are really stressed and fail or make noise.
ddavidv That's the noise I'm talking about. Sounds like the spring is trying to jump out of place. I'll check the springs to see if I got them seated properly. William, not a bad idea with the bushings. Will do that too. Thanks
