When to change oil weight?
Hey Guys
My 97 has 150,000 plus miles...I am currently running Castrol Syntec Blend 10w-30. I have heard that as engines get older they need heavier weight oil...should I be running a 40 weight oil, is it ever neccessary. I live in Maryland, and lately temps have been around 4 to 15 degrees (this week anyway). I know this is more of an oil and lube forum question....but that forum has to much to read...and half the time its not even advice for an engine thats our size.
thanks in advance

Your truck should run fine with the 10w-30.
Check out this 4.2 specific oil thread.

They are going to stop making 10-40 oil soon anyway so you might as well stay with the 30. I can tell you why they are getting rid of it, but the post will be too long for me to explain, but they are going to stop manufacturing it soon.
Stick with the 30, it's already heavier than Ford recommends, which is normally 5-20.
