rattle/loose chain sound whith startup.

I recently noticed my 2000 Expl. Sport 4.0L OHV has an odd sound after starting up. The sound is kinda like a chain rattling coming from somewhere towards the front and maybe underneath the vehicle. The noise is only present while in drive or reverse and goes away after the engine has warmed up. Anybody know what this could be Id like as much info as possible before it either gets worse or before I take it to a shop. Thanks guys.

Cam chain tensioners or guides!

Also how many miles on your ex ?
What oil and filter are you using?

Do you do your own oil changes ?

If so be aware of any white plastic pieces coming out of the drain plug.

these are from the cam tensioners and guides

Take it in.

have been doing my own oil changes the last 4 times or so never noticed anythign in there just changhed oil yesterday and nothing. Put Fram xtra guard oil filter on with Mobil 1 synthetic oil. Exp has 43000 or so on it. I thought the cam chain tensioner and guides were only probs with the sohc models?

The OHV engines don't have the cam tensioner problems, only the SOHC engines have that problem. I've heard from people on the Explorer Forum that it was just a design flaw and will not cause any damage to your engine. They have to live with the noise but it's nothing major.
