weak weak, 89 f 250

My dad but a truck new in 89. Its a f 250, 4x4, 302, M5OD, 3.55. from what i have been reading that is sorta a weak combo. He has since past and I have the truck. I figure if you have f 250 you have a strong suspention and frame but can't do much with it with a 302 with a M5OD behind it. From what I have read and talked to others i think i have the only 250 with a M5OD. I know you might be thinking i'm confusing it with a zf but it says M for tranny code and you have to drive 40 mph in reverse. Did ford they really put mazdas in 250s? What were they thinking? Also what business does a 302 have a in a 250. Since I have the truck I would like to be able to haul and pull things. From what I read a zf if as close as can get to what i already got. It have lower 1st gear but still have OD and is tougher. Are the mazda and a zf a direct swap? i also toyed with the idea of putting in a 351 to give it some snort. Would the 351 and 302 be direct also? I know many late 80's and early 90's had 4 speeds, either np 435 or T-18s but have only seen 3 or 4 in my life. I wouldn't mind putting one of these in despite losing OD. Would it be easy or would it be a problem with the transfer case and bell houseing?

According to my book, 89 F250's came with the M5OD (4.9L and 5.0) T-18, and ZF transmissions. I think the ZF would bolt in, and for the T-18 you would probably have to alter driveshaft lengths )front shorter and rear longer?).
Stick a ZF and a 351 in there (and send me your M5OD for my Bronco)

Light duty F-250s were available with a 302 and the Mazda. I don't know what they were thinking, either.

Some here recently did a ZF swap, and went into some detail about what was required. I think it was pretty painless. As far as the engine swap, you'd be better off in one of the engine forums.

Big White Bronco, What year motor? How much for just the motor? What all goes with it? Are you willing to crate it for shipping? Long way to ground zero from here. Is the tranny for 2wd or 4wd?

Flyhound, I have the same setup in an `88 F250. It was ordered by a leather company salesman for economical reasons (highway travel from South Central Texas to Colorado w/light loads). Big mistake! Mileage and towing power SUCKS! I get better mileage out of my 1986 460 Crew Cab.

i'll get rid of the motor, tranny and t-case for $550, i'll ship it, but i cant pay for the shipping. its na 89 5.0 out of a bronco, well its still in the bronco, but coming out soon. w/ 96k on the od. they are original and all matching #' parts. everthing is there, intake to oil pan. timing cover to rear t-case universal. the tranny might need a rebuils come another 10 k miles. thats all, i'll give you the master cylender also. let me know what you thin, i'm in long island ny. so you can figure how far it would have to be shipped.
