Question Performance upgrades

I have read a lot of posts about K&N air filters, performance exhaust systems, headers, etc... All the posts say that these upgrades are inexpensive, easy to do, and give noticeable improvements in horsepower and fuel economy at the same time with no negative side effects. My question is that if these mods are so great and not expensive than why didn't Ford just do the mods when they built the truck?

Because they are not as inexpensive as the stock units, they do not always give the sorts of gains in performance and mileage that some people claim and because in general they increase NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) which is a major design parameter for Ford. Ford will spend huge amounts of money reducing intake and exhaust noise on cars like the Mustang Cobra so that the buyers can rip out the intake silencer and bolt on a FLowmaster. Go figure.

The bottom line is that none of the (except Ferrari, Porsche, etc.) automakers build cars for enthusiasts. They build cars for people who buy cars the way they would a toaster. Anything that removes the vehicle from appealing to the lowest common denominator or which increases cost has no chance.
