distributor replacement

Having never removed a distributor, let alone put one back in, I'm happy to say I did it last night, and it worked fine.

Last night I put in an MSD distributor, ignition module and a coil. When I was all done, I went to start the thing, and surprisingly it started right up. Obviously, the timming was off (and is still, as I don't have a light) but otherwise it went well. The only issue that I had was: getting the oil pump shaft to line up correctly. Fortunatly, I was able to put a 1/4 inch drive 1/4" socket on several extenders and rotate it so that it would line up...

Monday I'm suppose to get my carb and headers (I already have the intake manifold) via UPS. I only hope that all that work goes a well.

I wanted to say thanks to everyone here. You've all been such a tremendous help. I'm sucking up here because I've got another question...

How do exhaust pipes generally connect to the ends of the headers. Clamps? Welding?

In a previous thread, I inquired about rebuild books. Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to try to pick up that book "How to Rebuild your Big Block Ford" by Steve Christ. I just wanted to say that I found another useful book, It's called "Ford Engine Overhaul Manual" by Chilton. I haven't looked at the other book, so I'm not saying this one is better, only that this one seems useful as well.

That's it for now.

Glad you got her going! Most headers have a collector that you weld on to your exhaust pipes and then you bolt the collector to the header. That MSD is a little more picky about having the oil pump shaft in the right position. I had to reach down with grease and make it stand up so it would just let the tip go in.

When you get your headers the best thing to do in my opinion is to bolt them on and drive it to the muffler shop. They can finish the exhaust from there. If theres a chance you might get busted for running open headers you might think of another idea. I drove mine right past the base commanders office and he either wasnt there or he didn't care.

Yeah, I suppose open headers would be quite loud!

It's a very nice sound. Yeah it's loud, but not unbearable in my opinion. Iv'e done this once before, and I had to go almost 20 miles to the muffler shop.

Ive done it several times. I did all my exhaust myself this time around tho
Full straight pipes from the 3'' collectors back to the mufflers
easier in my opinion
But a muffler shop does do a good job, and next time Im having them do it also
