V10 = more idel grunt

On paper the V10 has more idel gint than the 7.3 or the little 6.0 and it's a GAS about 30FTLBS than the 7.3 and 45 than that 6.0
WHat's up with the Diesel crowd saying "I got more low end grunt than everybody?I pull better than everyone?Gassers should be left in cars.I think That people that CLAIM they pull FAT trailers need a F550 6.0 with 4.88s in it to pull 8,000 when I pull 10,000-15,000LBS with my 78 and NOT ANY problems and it is a 4 spd 6Cyl Now F250.
I'd pull 35,000 LBS with a F350SRW as a matter of fact....OH wait I've done it!! Ya YA trailer brakes and Common sense Don't ride people's asses and expect to stop on a dime Ain't gonna happen. I'll tow anything I need to and No You need a diesel 650 *******es are stopping me.I slow down and use sense that's why I can do it

This is true, it's also true for Chevy and GMC trucks. If you've ever seen the spec's on the 8.1L and Duramax engines you see that while the DMax gets up to 520FTLB sooner in the RPM range than the 8.1L does to reach it's 455FTLB max, the D Max is only producing around 300 FTLB at dead idle, whereas the 8.1L is making about 400FTLB at idle.

This factor along with the fact that the gassers are producing way more horsepower to start with-and producing it at high rpm's as well, are the reasons I suspect that the big block gassers are still rated to pull a bit more weight than the diesels even if they dont pull it as effectively in all situations.

Probably has more to do with the fact that they weigh considerably less. Nobody tows at idle.

Exactly. The total combined weight with a V10/V8 is less than with a diesel... so you have more capacity left over. Funny, eh?

I don't think Ford rated our towing capacities based on engine performance, only total combined weight and what the chassis can take. But then, there is a difference between 3.73 and 4.30's, so there is SOME consideration for performance, but not based on the motor at least.

"Idle" may be a little misleading here. I think to get the torque and horsepower you see in the charts you have to be at wide open throttle (at idle speed, of course). This would be true for gas or diesel engines.

Correct.

That's how we would dyno test our engines after we rebuilt them.

Put the load on them and keep putting it on and feeding fuel until it just couldn't handle it anymore. Sometimes the engine would be turning 900RPM but handling a hell of a load.
