My 7.5L 460 developed a droning (louder for a while, then quieter, no pattern) knocking sound from the front passenger side of the engine. I did a bit of listening (long screwdiver to ear) and determined that the problem was not a noisy lifter or engine sound, but seamed to be the alternator. Seeing that I replaced this only 2 months ago I figured the replacement had gone bad. I swapped it for a new one today, installed it, and the sound was back after it had idled for about 10 minutes and warmed up. #@$&#
OK, what now.... The next thing down and under the alternator is the air pump. (according to a belt routing diagram)
Can an air pump sound like this when it goes? It sounded bad when I listened to it, but so did the alternator. If it is gone, what risk are involved if it gets driven for a day or so until I can replace it.
I can't believe a fresh alternator would have the same probem.
Thanks from the guy who's wife has to drive his truck for a few days.
Well, if you replaced the alternator and the sound is still there, then the odds are it's not the alternator. You only need a air pump if you run air conditioning, i took the air pump off of my motor and it ran the same. So you probably will not have a problem driving with a bad air pump for a few days, I dont think you will need your air conditioning in the next few days if you live in B.C., i am in washington state and its 17 degrees f.
No need for AC. -10 C or about 14-15 F right now. I don't think the AC could compete with an open window right now. Pond Hockey soon if this keeps up.
Does the air pump also supply air to the smog control system. I am not due to go through the local smog control police for a number of months, but was told that this is a function of this component as well.
Will get a second (ear) opinion from a mechanic friend before replacing the air pump.
