replacing fuel tank on 2000 F250SD short bed/Crew Cab

I love my truck!!!! But I drive 100 miles a day, to and from work. A coworker has an Excursion with the V10, but he has a 44 gallon gas tank.

Is it possible to replace my 29 gallon tank with a new 44 gallon tank, without modifying anything under the truck? I'm getting tired of filling up every 2 1/2 days...

Thanks.

"Where there is a will..."

Be advised that if successful, you'll lose your under-the-truck spare tire carrying ability. Plus, the Excursion has a different receiver hitch. Yours may need to be changed to accomodate the new tank.

I also believe that the Excursion frame from the rear wheels back is 1" longer than the trucks but a visual side-by-side comparo would verify that.

I installed a 48 gallon in my '02 F350 shortbed, it replaced the OE tank. The extra capacity is fantastic when towing.

Good news and bad. The Excursion tank (or F450) goes were your spare tire is. So if you add that you will have 73 gallons (29 + 44), with both tanks, but no spare tire area. You could replace your stock short bed tank (29 gallon), with a long bed tank (39 gallons) to gain 10 gallons. I've seen new F450 tanks on eBay for as little as $50 but watch shipping, large item so trucking can go into to $100-$200+ range (this happen to me). An internet search show used tanks, (exclusion, superduty, etc) tanks run at the low end of $150-$250 in the wrecking yards, so that might be the way to go, if you can find one near you. The simples way would be to get the tank with it's fuel pump, etc, and add a tank selector (like on pre-SuperDuty trucks). It looks like there would be room behind the license plate to add a filler neck, and have it hidden by the plate. TransferFlow makes some great set-ups, but they are priced out of my range $800-$1500.........
Good luck,

I will be at the transfer flow facility on the 26th of this month, getting the 46 gallon tank fitted. I will let you all know how it went. I could have got it fitted elsewhere, but I like to travel.

I now have the Transfer Flo 46 gallon replacement midships fuel tank fitted. The trip to get it was amazing, and the difference the tank makes is also amazing. Highway miles I now need to fill every 800 miles, which is way better than it was. The fuel guage works well, but you go over 100 miles before it drops past the full mark, with a rapid drop to ¾ full. Then a gradual drop to ½ full, when it takes 19.82 gallons to fill it up again. It continues to fall gradually to the empty mark, when it has about 8 gallons left. The farthest driven on one tank is 746 miles and it only took 38 gallons to fill.

Not necessarily. Go to www.transferflow.com

They make various capacity fuel tanks and you should be able to get a larger tank without losing the spare or receiver.

Will the stock longbed 38 gallon tank replace the shortbed's smaller tank without truck modifications? If so, I'll probably be making a trip to the wrecking yard soon.....

I took the truck to Transfer Flo, in Chico California. They took 4 hours, and did a good job. I was surprised to be treated so well, a friendly courteous person dealt with me from order to completion. The same guy took the phone call, and waved good bye as I left with the work done. That is weelcome and very unusual Customer Relations. You have to get right under the truck to see the tank, it fits so well. I am north Dakota, so showing anyone the tank fitted is probably not likely.
