fuel milage

I have a 272 in my 58 F 250.What is the typical gas mileage i might expect to get.i believe it has the N.P.435 tranny but not sure about the rear gears.I figured it might be low sped.it wont be a daily driver but i'm just looking for an estimate. Thanks

The best I can remember getting from my 64 is 14 mpg, I dont use it that much, but average about 10-12mpg.

I do not see many modern trucks getting much better. My 57 gets about 15 or runs about 4 hours it will do better on long trips. But I have changed my gearing. Their are things to help this like taller rear end gears and staying off the 4 bbl.

57 ford

true. thats just about the figure i was thinking.sometimes fuel milage can give you an indication of a problem.i'm happy with 10-12.but 12-15 would make me happier.lol.does higher octane gas make much of a difference in these older engines? i usually run the good stuff in my other vech.helps with spark knock and i notice the difference in the hills?

Fordfaggiole, I think it does make a difference useing higher octane gas. I think it all depends on the engine and how the timming is set and the compresshion ratio. In 57 and some 58s 272s had ecz-g heads on trucks and they were the higher compresshion heads. Those engines would need a little more octane mine seems to like mid grade. With the cheap gas I do get spark knock. I melted a hole in a pistion pulling a trailer and I think spark knock caused it but not sure. I also seem to remember when I first started driving you could still buy leaded gas and I think I remember the pumps saying 93 octane. This is to the best of my knowledge.

higher octane fuel

Actually, higher octane fuel on a low compression engine will usualy reduce mileage as it burns slower.
My 292 has 8:1 compression, I run regular with my timing at 10 deg. before, and get just a slight ping when stomping on the throttle.
I do not know the ratio of my rear, but it is fairly low, turns about 3000 RPM at 55 mph.
Also you can go to y-blocksforever.com and find your compression ratio by the cast number on your heads.
