302 advance curve/timming for performance?
I know I need to experiment to find out but I want some guidelines to work with.
Ouestion is:
How many degrees of total timming does a 302 like?
How many degrees of inital timming work best?
What kind of a curve is recomended for my application?
How many degrees should the vaccum advance give for a performance application?
The application is:
An almost stock 302 like in a 4400lb truck with a manual trans, 3.55 gears, and 31 inch tires. The engine is a 86 F150 302 that has been converted from EFI to a carb. It has a re-jetted 350 cfm 2bbl carb, Duraspark II ignition, and dual exhaust.
Thank-you all,
Clayton

try 8 to 10 deg to start with ( better yet get a vacuum gauge and set the timing by the gauge , adv. until the highest vacuum is reading then back off timing until the gauge drops 1in. and set the timing there and it will be very close to perfect). Try 36-38 deg total mech. and experiment with the vacuum adv. probably another 10 deg. or so , this is highly individual to the specific engine and loads.
