Is there a purpose for roof clearance lights?
From a previous thread on this about 2 weeks old:
Clearance lights have become a GOB (Good Ol' Boy) thing, I wouldn't expect you city slickers from California to understand.
If you grew up on a farm or in a rural area (southern Saskatchewan, Canada) like I did, you didn't see a truck without them. They were regulation (in Canada anyway) if your vehicle was over a certain height and wider than 80". I think this dates back to narrow two lane highways and country roads, when a lane was maybe 90" wide.
That, and like the previous posters, I love the look of a lit up truck on the road at night. I'm sure you've all seen a nice Kenworth or Pete light up the night as it barrelled down the highway.
>"Yeah they make you look like a hot shot driver.:-X23 "
Let me guess, your other car is a hopped up Honda Civic. To each his own I guess.

Yes the clearance lights on the roof of the truck is to designate that the truck is wide and shows the height of the vehical oh ya they do make the truck look a heck of alot better at night. The lights also make others see you easier when they come in the opposite direction instead of two bright headlights.
I have forgotten the regs for the clearance lights but any cab and chassis truck F-350 and larger must be equiped with them or F-350 dually p/u's.

I believe Waxy said it: 80" wide (not including the mirrors). Duallys obviously fit the bill and come standard with them.

I am not sure if they are required on privately regestered p/u.
I do have a friend who drives a big rig and he once told me that any light you have on a 18 wheeler has to work. He looks like a christmas tree coming down the road and got a ticket for having one usless decorative light out. So I would check you state regs before putting them on b/c in some states if you have them and one is out you may face a ticket

Is there a purpose for roof clearance lights?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Aug-02 AT 10:22 AM (EST)]I grew up splitting my time between living in Kannata Valley, little community on the north shore of Last Mountain Lake (just south of Silton), and Regina. I went to school in Regina though ( about a 1/2hr south). My family farms in the SW, a little town called Richmound, about an hour north of Maple Creek along the AB-SK border. So I spent, and continue to spend, a fair bit of time there when I can. I'm living in Calgary now.
How about yourself?

P.S. - daimon1054- I take it back, and I'll buy you a virtual beer. Wish I had a Vette. I live in an oil town myself, so F350 CC 4X4's are more common than chebbie Cavaliers here too. In fact when I was shopping I turned down a couple of good deals on trucks because they were white. A white truck around here is automatically considered a rig (oil/gas) truck and has ZERO resale value, even if it's mint. For good reason too, most look like they've been through WWIII after 3 years of getting bagged and being dragged in and out of leases by Cats. You have to be careful, they often have low miles, so guys buy 'em, paint 'em, and sell 'em to the unsuspecting public.
