I also have just recently experienced the problem that you described as a high speed, high pitched spinning when taking foot off of accerator, and when you put on the brake or back on the accerator, it stops... I have a 1998 Explorer and this all started after having it in 4 wheel drive low after the snow strom here a few weeks ago... seems like to us that 4 wheel drive is still trying to engage when were moving, thus making this high pitched spinning noise.

talked with my mechanic and he seems to think that it is just that my 4 wheel drive did not disengage completely the last time we used it, so we went back through the steps of correctly disengaging the 4 wheel drive ...

stopping the vehicle, placing it in neutral, foot mashed on the brake and then moving the 4 wheel drive switch back to the auto position. then we backed up a bit and herd the 4 wheel drive kick out ( loud thud) since doing this the noise has stopped. Not sure if it was that or not, but since it started after the 4 wheel drive being used, and then stopped when we disengaged it correctly.. seems to be help. no more noise...

hope yours is the same and as easy to correct.

Christina
I wanted you to know that i tried what you said and it fixed my 2000 explorer, thank you very much and tell ur mechanic thanks too...

I also have a 97 explorer with transfer case whinning and appreciate the info in this forum. Since this seems to be minimized by either braking or acceleration has anyone explored if there could be an electrical solution that will fool the transfer case to think you have slight brake/accel?

Since all but one of the posts in this thread point to the transfer case as the issue, and the information shared in post #7 suggest that the issue is a mechanical issue, a simple electrical solution to fool the truck in to thinking the brakes are applied or accelerator is pressed is not going to even mask the issue. There is no electrical tie between either the brakes or the transmission, the source of the noise is reported to be alignment of the transfer case internals and gear cut style. Also, the article indicates that if left unresolved the issue will continue to get worse.

I'm afraid the only solution will be to repair/replace the transfer case.

Sweet thread... sounds like the Explorer I just picked up has the same issue. I knew it had a noise and got a really nice car for a great price. Now... to fix it!

It sounds like a really robust repair is to use new, improved case-halves and rebuild the transfer case... But what if I don't need A4WD?

is this gear/shift fork associated only with the front drive shaft? What if I remove the front drive shaft and roll with RWD only?

I'll do some more learning and research to understand the T-case a lot better, but this seems like a quick simple "solution" to prevent further damage and maintain a comfortable ride.

Thanks for replying on an old thread!

-Jimmy
