Long tubes and emissions

Is it possible to get long tubes that will work with emissions stuff? I would like to get coated long tube headers that will work with a high flow cat...what type of crossover do I need? I don't really want to run true duals. Can I buy this stuff out of the box or does it require a lot of custom fitting?

You are talking about complete custom components when you go to long tube headers. It is very difficult to get a Y pipe to work with them, and still be street legal (ie cats and sensors). Is there a reason you want long tubes? Have you thought about equal length shortys (better than regular shorties)? I am running a pair of Bassani ceramic coated equal lengths on my bronco. Most guys run true duals (illegal in most states) when they go to long tubes.

No, I was thinking equal length. My only reason for thinking long tubes was that I understand that they provide better low end torque which would be great with my 302. I also understand that shorty's can lower your existing manifold setup torque for lower rpm and increase it over 5K rpm...that wouldn't be good. Are equal length shorty's a compromise between the 2? what kind of difference did you notice with your bassani's and did you use their Y pipe too? Any problems with the bolts backing off or not being able to get to the spark plugs?

Yes, there is no doubt that long tubes provide much better low end torque. They are a hassle though, like stated previously. I have noticed a slight loss at low rpms, but the passing power and get up and go from mid rpm ranges make up for it in my opinion (this thing would rock if I had 4.10 gearing). Yes, equal length are the best of both worlds. I have their ceramic headers, high flow Y pipe, and catback. I have had all of this installed for a good six months now, and not one bolt has backed off. I havent had to change plugs yet, so I cant tell you. It wont be easy, but it can be done with patience.

How about noise inside the cabin? I really am not looking to make a lot of racket (or hear it), did you notice a big difference? Bummer about losing that low end torque.

The only increase in noise that I have observed is from the actual catback. This would be vehicle dependant though. I own a bronco, so I am basically sitting on top of the muffler, whereas on a pickup truck, it is behind you many feet.
