6.0l Idle Speed And Idle Sound

Got a question for all of you 6.0L Powerstrokin' owners. What rpm does your 6.0L idle at when it is at its correct operating tempeture. My friend has a 2003 6.0L automatic and it idle's at 600. My 2004 6.0L 6-speed idles at no less than 800. Both trucks idle themselves up when its cold and fall back to their idle's listed above. The 2003 is alot quiter than mine too. My 2004 always sounds like its in the "cold mode" when the timing is advanced. It never really looses the knocking sound. The guy that owns the 2003 had his computer reprogrammed by ford and said it lowered the idle. Think I should do the same? Or do you think that the ones with 6-speeds are set to idle a smudge higher?

Mine also idles at 600rpms, it gets noticeably louder near 800rpms when pilot injection turns off. Sounds just like psdwanabe`s sound clip. John

It might have something to do with your truck being a manual like you said. Hopefully someone on here with a manual will chime in and say.

wilba504 you never had a flash on your truck, cause if you have you dont have pilot injection any more that is one thing you loose with flash. at least that is what everyone is saying and I lost mine on oct. flash.

Cold (right outta the box) at aout 600, but after 2 minutes climbs to 1200 until I touch the brake, then back to 600'ish. Left running it will go back to 1200 after 5 minutes or so.
No one else's does this? i thought it was normal, though i don't know why.

Hi Nickydiesel,

This is normal at temps below 32 degrees. I read it in the diesel supplement. Hope this helps, John

6.0 L Idle Speed Update

Well guys I have almost 8000 miles on my 2004 6 sp stroker now. I got the idle problem fixed. Ford reprogrammed the computer in it. It lowered the idle a smudge, didn't help the sound, but it doesn't chug or smoke anymore. My friend just got his 2004 6 speed stroker and his idle's like an automatic one and is just as quiet as one. I do stil have a problem with mine though. Sometimes out of the blue you will get in it to start it and after the glow plug light goes off, it will just crank and crank and not start. Warm or cold it does this, so I know its not a glow plug problem. If you turn the key off, pull it out of the ignition, put it back in and try it again, usually it starts the 2nd or 3rd time. Whatever shuts the fuel off when you turn the key off I think is what is causing it. Ford says bring it in right away, but I know they won't be able to fix it. They always have to call in a "specialist"

Take it in! I had the same problem and it turned out to be a bad c95 injector. Won't give you a check engine light but leaves hard code in computer. Mine also idles @ 750 on the nose and still does. They are looking into it which means NO FIX.

Go to this thread, read completely…. Follow, on page 3..MLF250’s format, it is good…and easy! and post. Important update to instructions on page 6.
Most important part of this data...also, there “is” owners out there that have had no problems. To be fare to my methodology… I need the same from the “no problem” owners.. i.e. mileage (mileage is the odometer reading)
important a “no problem” statement if you have had none.

ODOMETER reading at time of problem is critical.
In addition, please read more instructions, bottom of first page, posted by Tim L
The simpler the writing (posting) of “problem/odometer” reading………….the easier it will be to collate.
Do not need many words, NO stories.
I must reduce all the date into a usable format; extra words will take more time to complete.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...hreadid=185570

I implore all 6.0 owners to please take the time

Thanks
Tim

Tim,

I will post in your thread when I get all of the details back. I had the truck picked up on Fri. and all items have not been repaired so the work order is still open and I have not been able to view it for information such as which injector was bad. I had to have the truck for the weekend and will take it back in for some more "good time" I mean "DOWN time" next week.

BTW, it has been a troubled starter from day one it now has 11,000 or so km's on her odo.

PS. Mechanic suggested to me over the phone that I take her in about every 3 months and complain about some little thing regarding start-up or idle and that would get it onto the scanner for free to find those little nasty's that your check engine light won't tell ya and has left a code.
