Ok, got a known issue with overheating and the engine, so I'm on my way back to work after picking up a new Thermostat and at a stop I smell the Tranny Oil burn, Hmmmm I pull into the parking lot and notice some droppings hitting an exhaust crossover that is just below the bell housing, Hmmm Is the tranny hot and burning or do i have a leak and because it is hitting the exhaust crossover is why I smell the burn scent???
Also would a bad thermostat cause me to have issues with the tranny that have a endstate of BUSTED SEAL???
Let me add one more problem to this, I am also in the process of finishing 4 wheel brake job, I did the rear ones first, thinking my Anti Lock lite will stop flashing and was going to do the front one this weekend. Does the Antilock have any play with the Trans and could this be a part of the issue.
The Tranny is a E40D, atttached to a 10.25 Ford Rear End, 7.3 Diesel.
Also am in need of Tranny Diagram, the manual tells me to check few areas for leaks, but has not a picture for the E4OD.
Is the fluid dripping from the tube at the bottom of the bell housing? If so pull the tranny and get it to a reputable shop before you go any further. I lost the front seal on mine in my banks parking lot and had it towed to the shop. If I hadn't shut down the truck and noticed the problem then I would likely have bought a new tranny. The front seal had dry rotted(the one around the pump housing) and it only cost me $285 for R&R and repair. Mine leak started out small and I thought it was an over heating problem as I first noticed it after pulling the horse trailer back from a show. Two weeks later it went totally south, and was pumping fluid on the pavement.
No the Anti-lock brakes have nothing to do with the tranny, other than letting it know when to down shift.
Not a tube, but from the slot in the bottom center of the bell housing, the drops fall right on the exhaust crossover.
What about the refill/check tube. When I did a valve job I messed up and did not put the bracket that holds it in place on the back side of the head. Could it have loosened up enough at the bottom and hence cause a leak????
MY GEM IS A 1987 F-250 DUALLY(FORD DIDN'T FACTORY PRODUCE AN F-350 DUALLY IN 87.OR SO I'M TOLD).My dad bought it about 6 years ago and shortly after the anti-lock light started coming and knocking out the radio every once in a while. It got worse and worse until finally it started killing the wipers quite frequently and then the engine.I finally put 2 and2 together and chaged the switch, and now I have no more problems.Hope that helps.
1SG It sounds like the front seal on the trans (behind the torque converter) is going. I am having the same problem.
The fill tube/dip stick tube may give you trouble later. Mine is an '89 F350 diesel and my tube has an "O" ring half way down. If the bracket holding the tube isn't doing its job, she might come loose at a bad time. You might lose it completely.
