I recommend a new clutch from Luk too. The Repsets are good and many times you'll replace a long style pressure plate with a diaphragm one that will make the clutch effort much lower and smoother.
Not turning the flywheel can be a mistake no matter what the surface looks like. Over time the flywheel gets pulled into a bowl shape by the pressure plate so check it for flatness using a straight edge and a feeler gauge. If it is out more than a few thousandths have it reground. What happens is the clutch disk gradually wears into this surface and it causes no problems. But when you replace the worn disk with a new one the clutch loads much more or totally around the outside edge of the disk. This can make it work unevenly or even cause it to tear the lining off of the new disk.
Thanks to everyone who chimed in, much appreciated. I think I'll just invest in a tranny jack and go that route, I'd like to replace the crossmember anyway. Thanks again!
