2002 SD,crew V-10 tu-tone island blue/silver.it looks great.still under 2000 miles lose of power and black soot exhaust.dealer said there is a charge for a computer scan? Whats up?
First off, GO TO A NEW DEALER. There should be NO CHARGE to analyze your vehicle under warranty, especially if an obvious problem exists and you're at 2000 MILES. Your dealer is trying to screw you.
As for the soot, that's strong indicator of a rich condition. How does it idle? How about starting? If it idles a little rough or is hard starting I'd go to the Idle Air Control valve first thing. Soot is usually an indiaction of unburned fuel or incomplete combustion. Given that your fuel delivery is controlled electronically, it is usually not a fuel problem. The dealer scan will tell you quickly if it is.
If not fuel, it must be air. I'd start with any obvious restrictions or plugging of the intake system. Then go to the IAC valve.
From there things get more more costly and less likely.
I'd try a new dealer ASAP, or tell your dealer how it's going to be. They should be able to get your problem solved.
If your using anything other than 87 octane it will turn the pipe sooty!
there are no octane sensors on these trucks, cam, compression ,intake design along with other things are designed with 87 octane in mind!
My 5.4 was doing the same thing I was running 89 octane had black sooty pipe. After I changed back to 87 ran for a few weeks ,went back to normal
color!
Now this not say you don't have a problem ,and
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Nov-02 AT 07:14 PM (EST)]If you run it with the throttle mashed sometimes, some soot is to be expected.Manufacturers like to run engines rich at wide open throttle.I call it insurance, safer to run rich than too lean at full throttle.
Could be a number of things, probably a sensor if you do have a problem.

Take a few minutes to email and/or write to Ford about this unscrupulous dealer's business practices. What he's doing is WRONG!!! If you don't complain & possibly get him in trouble with Ford, he will continue to scam others. I hate this kind of dirty, rotten, filthy, no-good, worthless, piece of , sucking, son of a motherless donkey type of jerks who think they can get away with this type of crap. Hell, if you don't have the time to write them, let me know. I'll pre-write the letter for you & email it to you. Just PLEASE make sure you file a complaint.
i have the same thing with my 2003 5.4 and the dealer at pompano ford told me it had no codes so it has no problem. i pointed to the black soot, rainbow colored muffler and gold exaust and told them i get 12 mpg on hwy 250SD ext cab 4x4 3.73s fords answer no codes so it is fine.... i am not happy with this at all and almost wish i bought a chevy 350 2500 4x4 ex cab that gets 14 town and 18 hwy....
but i liked the ford looks so i get what i get.
I'm no expert on the newer engines but I had this same problem on the old Navajo Ford 4.0 once. The exhaust was sooty with poor mileage, no specific code appeared. Eventually it quit running completely. I knew it was running rich so me and my buddy went though all the possiblites and found it on a pressure test to the fuel rail. Turns out the fuel pressure regulator on the rail was broken, wide open. Fixed it and it ran fine. Not sure if the newer motors have this or not, could be the culprit though if they do.
Also, the overly rich condition meant raw fuel was seeping into the oil via the cylinders. The oil was really watered down, and reeked of gas. Make sure your oil does not have fuel in it with the condition you are describing, you may save a bearing or two.
