Hey all, I got a 71 F-100 with the 3 speed column shift manual which has been shifting great since I got it. Today I was out in a parking lot learning to drive manual and it was driving fine, until it wasn't. Was in first and tried shifting into second and noticed I couldn't get into second. I stopped and tried to get into any gear, but the shifter really just flopped around, couldn't feel any gears let alone get into any of them, just stayed in first. Limped it back home in first gear and now I'm here. Any ideas what broke? Before it stopped working, I had shifted into second and it kinda made a click/pop noise, but it really didn't sound or feel like anything broke and it shifted into gear fine, and I know I shifted back into first fine after that, so I'm not sure if that was it or unrelated. Thanks.
If you disconnect the linkage do any of the shift arms freely move, act like not connected.
The last time I was in a manual column shift column was in the 70's. If I recall there is a tab that is spot welded on the shift tube where the gear shift ***** contact. Also some plastic parts involved, bearings. I would suggest you remove the column and take it apart for inspection.
Check all points where the shift rods connect at the column and at the transmission. Look for worn out bushings and clips. On my '66, If I'm not careful, I can jamb the column shift levers. I'm either stuck in gear or out of gear. I have to turn off the engine, put it in park, go under the hood and pull up on one of the levers. I have some play/wear in my column that I think is where the shifter engages the shift collar. (A rebuild is coming this fall)
