Are you sure you have freon in the system? The pressure switch will not allow the compressor to engage if it does not see pressure in the system, to protect the compressor.

I agree, I use them all the time. But only when either verifying the compressor works or after having the system open and recharging. If you have know idea on the system (the OP did not offer any additional info) it could destroy things very quickly.
99F250 SD; What relay controls the ac compressor clutch? Not getting power to engage
This may sound stupid but I accidentally found my fix for a similar prob with my truck.
With engine running turn on the AC and start moving the wires a bit going into the AC pump. Mine would work, then not work...eventually not at all. I was watching the operation of the clutch and while looking around bumped the wires and it worked, then stopped. It didn't look broken but it was inside the wiring insulation. New pig tail and all good to go. Still working fine after 10+ yrs
Was just going to say " Look at that connector on the switch. I've had that go bad on two different vehicles over the years. Wiggle it and see if compressor comes on/off
Also the air gap on clutch is known to get to big and won't click in. You can tap end of clutch with a screwdriver handle and see if it will kick in. If it does jus toull outer clutch piece riff and remove a shim. But if you don't have power going thats not going to fix it. But it is a common problem with them.
X2 on checking that pressure switch plug. I've had to replace the switch and the plug twice over the years due to burned out pins down inside the plug blocking current flow. Undersized connectors for the load fries them on a regular basis. At least that's the way it is on my truck.
