Engine Code Deciphering

Question Engine Code Deciphering

Well, I pulled the codes on my Bronco to try and find out why it sometimes hesitates at light throttle, downshifts at strange times, and the check engine light flashes on for a few minutes every once in a while. The codes that I pulled are:

KOEO Codes:
111
Continuous Stored Codes:
179, 332, 628, 634

KOER Codes:
311


Any help figuring what to check because of these would be a great help. Thanks.

111 - System Pass
179 - HEGO (HO2S) sensor fault unable to switch / rich during part throttle
332 - Insufficient EGR flow detected
628 - Excessive converter clutch slippage
634 - Manual Lever Position sensor voltage higher or lower than expected or A/C on
311 - Thermactor air system/fault during engine run self-test

Ok, I already had the definitions. What I was hoping for was someone who could decipher them into english and recommend what I should check/replace. Thanks.

For code 179, replacing the oxygensensor is the only remedy i know of. For 332, try cleaning the EGR Valve and checking the vacuum lines going to it. 628 is pretty self-explanitory, but it may be partly caused by what's happening with code 634. Replacing the MLPS switch (on the side of the tranny where the linkage connects) especially if your's is an E4OD, there were some problems with the factory MLPS switches. For code 311, it's hard to say, check the air pump, if it blows air (from the outlet behind the battery) then it should be ok. Check the TAB and TAD solenoids and all the vacuum lines running to and from them. Check the diverter valve below and behind the air pump and the vacuum line to it.
Checking all this stuff out will probably take some time, and describing the procedures here would take quite a while. A haynes or chilton's manual would be very helpful in diagnosing the problems and in guiding you through the procedures. Good luck with all this!

One more thing, for code 634, make sure the bronc is in park when you run the test and the A/C is off. Easy things to forget. Again, good luck

For the EGR error (332) I wouldn't even worry about it. EGR basically filters the gas that you don't burn back into the system so it is not wasted. If you replace this part you will notice a little better gas mileage but I let my EGR burn completely out and never replaced it... I've never had a problem with it.

The only problem with letting the EGR burn out is that the ECU is programmed to expect that extra fuel is being recirculated through the EGR. The engine will be getting less fuel than the computer thinks it is getting and the engine will run lean. Lean conditions can cause all sorts of problems in the long run due to the extra heat produced by a lean mixture. I dont know exactly how much leaner the fuel mixture is w/o the fuel from the EGR, but my take is that it's better safe than siezed. That is, except when working with a sawzall and pry-bar.

634 could cause downshifting at strange times.
179 looks like your light throttle hesitation.

628 is the most difficult/expensive fix.
You have to pull the driveshafts, tcase and E4OD to chage the TC.
If you let it go you will eventually have a problem with very hard shifts.

So replacing the oxygen sensor would fix my 179 code? How hard is that to do? What about the MLPS switch? Can I get those parts at Autozone or would those be dealer only? When you said changing the TC you mean torque converter? I do have hard shifts, but only occasionally at certain throttle. Thanks.

Is there just one oxygen sensor on my Bronco? I have not seen the MLPS switch at AZ so I am thinking that is probably a dealer part?

There should be only one o2 sensor on your bronc, probably pass side where the pipes from each of your exhaust manifolds join. The MLPS switch is probably gonna be a dealer item, but check with Advance Auto if they exist where you are, I think they may hanve them. Good Luck.

So when I go to the dealer or advance auto I can just ask for a MLPS switch and they will know what I am asking for? Any idea what the price range is on that part? Thanks.
