yes, I’m not sure how its supposed to be connected on a 96. I’m putting a M5od in my 79 and need to figure out how to connect the hydraulic clutch.
I don’t know how it is on a ‘79 but on my ‘89 the master cylinder is to the right (inboard) of the booster on the firewall with a splined lever on the end. There is a shaft that runs through the pedal box to transfer movement from the pedal across to the master. There is a splined lever on the end that connects the master to that through shaft.
It looks like the design didn’t change in the next generation.
The later hydraulic clutch setup. It's terrible.
The tube- through- a- tube design is dumb, the plastic parts on
the end break, pop off, and generally stink, the 'clutch safety switch' is a hazard,
and overall, it's just a poorly thought out mess to move the main cylinder over a bit.
I would take a mechanical linkage over it, or fabricate something with a remote
reservoir main cylinder instead of retrofitting the 'stock' setup into an older truck.
I haven’t had any issues with the clutch on my ‘89. I replaced the entire hydraulic system with a Luk prefilled master/ hose assembly and a slave cylinder. So far so good but it hasn’t been driven very much.
That is exactly what I did with the CJ. I used a newer tub in better shape which had a hydraulic clutch. I had the body shop remove and fill the hole in the firewall and instead used the mechanical linkage. Works real good and lasts a long time.
