Gearbox noise

2023 F250 STX 4x4, all stock, crew cab, short bed 7.3 gas.

Just bought the truck, has 29k miles, Ford Gold Certified. So still under bumper to bumper, still under powertrain, and still gold certified.

i have a weird noise, sounds like a gearbox noise. Gets a little louder with speed, then the noise goes away when driving 45+ but that’s most because the noise is being drowned out. Not sure how else to explain the noise, almost like an electronic assist motor sound, like it’s one of those first gen hybrid cars.

It sounds like it’s coming from under the rear seat, so just aft of the transmission. I have an appt with Ford, just looking for if it’s normal, what to kind of point to, or any other help.

my dealers really open to ideas and suggestions, as I know some aren’t.

Normal, the 10speed transmission is noisy, something about how the gears are cut and mesh.

I have that kind of noise, I think it's the output shaft bearing on the differential. I can hear it real good when slowing down from like 30 to 15 mph.

yeah, that’s why I said it sounds like an old hybrid…almost sounds like my neighbors side by side with the CVT type transmission, lol

And you’re hearing it because the passive air vent design in the backside of the cab of the truck on 23+ models allows more air flow/noise to come through.

Check the fluid level of the rear differential, tcase and transmission yourself just it be safe. If they are low and making noise, the damage is already done. Only a fool would take a dealers word that levels are fine. Just like they are supposed to perform PDIs but most don't. The trucks get out the door low on fluid and then failure happens. Then they blame Ford, when the dealer is lazy, and should be blamed.
ive ridden in many 20-24 Superduties with both the 7.3 and 6.7. ALL have been stone silent except one. The owner bought it new and assumed the pdi was done. It was not, 50k miles in, the pinion bearing was LOUD. I checked the rear gear oil and couldn't touch it with my pinky. I drained it and pulled the cover off. Less than one quart drained. It was tar black and full of metal. He then took it to the dealer and just said "It's making noise" he got the differential rebuilt.
The other truck owners of trucks I drove, checked and topped off fluids when tbe immediately got home from the dealer.
I SCARED them with the story about my Dana M300 having only two quarts.

I’ll check/change the rear differential and the transfer case. And yes, both were quite low from the factory on my F150.

if it’s low enough now to make noise, it’s already too late . Luckily, it will be under warranty the whole time I own it.

Ended up being the rear pinion bearing…at least that’s what the dealer says and they ordered a part.

they said it was pretty clear once they got it on the lift.

Would be interesting to get some pictures of the failed bearings and races.

In my experience as I was growing up driving worn out trucks a pinion bearing failure was ALWAYS from being run low or empty. I drove a 1978 F350 300 I6 np435 or years. It was low when I got it it. It would lightly hum between 45mph-60mph. When I changed the gear oil to Redline 75w140, it never got worse.
I saw a 1992 F250 351 scream like hell, told the kid to check the fluid. He never did and a year later it locked up and rolled into a ditch killing him. We were in high school. He lived one town over.
pinion seems to be the first to go when run low.
park it nose down on a hill, add another 8oz of gear oil. 75w140. Guys CHECK IT WHEN YOU GET IT NEW FROM THE DEALER! THEY do not top them off on the pdi
do it yourself to avoid being without a truck for weeks or months.
