Alright boys, need some help and opinions. Let me lay out the story for you guys to give perspective. I was driving my 2000 ford f250 down the road the other day when I heard a clunk and a random shift into 4 low and roaring of my gears going limp mode from going prox 15 mph (luckily). So, I got to work. I went underneath to investigate the transfer case motor everything looked good I pulled the motor and bench tested it. It was a dead motor so I ordered a new one while I did so I went through all other odds and ends to makes sure everything else was okay. I blew fuse 17 under the hood and replaced that aswell. Skipped to the motor arriving. I plugged her up on the harness and before bolting it I tested it in the harness. It was working strong no issues. But the moment bolted it on it stopped working (nothing is that simple sadly). I took it back off the harness to bench test the motor just in case and it was working perfectly. So I checked the harnesses. The only power I'm getting is from one of the pins from the control harness (6 pin plug) though it looks kinda weak. But motor harness (2 wire plug) has no power even if you switch though the gears. I thought maybe my wire to my terminals were maybe not enough juice sooooo I changed out the wires for both ground and power terminals. Still didnt change anything. But I did notice when I reset it would work for a bit than stop. I thought it's computer related. So, I pulled codes (pictures posted with this post). This is where I'm at. I'm not sure where to go from here but eye balling the wiring harness doesn't look to bad but I haven't checked the whole harness just the ends I can get to. Anywho, I just need some opinions.
I sure hope it is not the GEM. I had one go bad on a 2001 Ford Explorer which is still sitting a few years later not running because of that.
The sun roof was left cracked open during a couple day long rain/snow storm, I didn't catch it until after the snow melted. My guess is water got in and when down the a-pillar and soaked the GEM mounted to the back of the fuse panel, corroded it and is causing all sorts of electrical issues if I connect a battery.
Hopefully you can trace a bad wire or something causing the t-case shifting issues but I see a lot of codes related to the GEM.
You and me both. I'd imagine it not being the GEM itself but maybe just some wire issue. Doesn't mean there's not a slight chance. I'll give updates if I get lucky enough to solve the mystery.
Alright, so after a long time of tracking down issues I'm a still at a loss. Let me give you guys a run down. So, I've went through 3 gems none of which worked (yes, I tried to program them, and it wouldn't let me do anything.) I then tried to track down the issue through the wire harness, but I don't see anything visibly wrong with the whole harness. I even replaced the pig tail for the control plug (nothing). I tried to go as far as to check all continuity for all wires and fuses and relays still nothing. Too give context what's happening I try to engage the 4wd and nothing happens no try, nothing on the dash, no nothing. But I was driving the other day to take my daughter to her gymnastics, and I was in mid drive I heard a noise that sounded like the 4wd was trying to kick on but didn't. It wasn't until I was on my way how it just swapped it completely out of gear into no gear like I was in neutral. I then had to take the motor off and use a wrench to change the gear back to 2wd manually but when I touched the control plug it made a noise hence why I thought to replace that plug because I thought maybe it was a bad connection. If anybody else has ideas I'd appreciate it.
Wildhorse manufacturing makes a product that is guaranteed to fix any any all electrotonic issues with the transfer case selector system., see link below, HIGLY recommend.
