Installed a summit (SUM-382039) $600 dollar radiator two years ago and it started pissing at the seams today with only 5k miles and two years on it. Any recommendations for a good radiator? I am running the original 400 with very mild cam and headers in a 78 4x4.and I'm in the high (Albuquerque)desert.
I bought the aluminum griffin from summit and it is falling apart too. I have had it for 10 years now but is has been slowly leaking for about 7 years. I was just thinking about buying the one you posted.
Are these the all aluminum radiators, ... or ... ones with plastic tanks crimped in place?
I damaged my stock 400 super cool a couple years ago, cleaned and patched with J B Weld per suggestion local mechanic / racer., black paint, still holding. I almost bought an all aluminum one, or one with plastic tanks.
I haven't installed it yet, but I grabbed an all aluminum unit from summit to put in mine. Visually it looks great, but that doesn't mean much. My original is leaking and would prefer to have it rebuilt but I don't have a radiator shop near me anymore. I figured for the cost spent on the summit unit, it was risk I was willing to take. I don't want the shiny aluminum look so I will be painting black, the tanks, and very lightly on the fins. I am concerned about galvanic corrosion so I will be replacing the drain plug on the radiator with an anode rod and will be adding a radiator to frame ground strap. Not sure if either of those additions will make any difference, but they won't hurt anything and aren't expensive additions.
Years ago I took my original copper radiator to a repair shop only to have them tell me it was old (seems obvious) and that they couldn’t repair. Kinda left me wondering what they do repair but none the less replaced with the champion.
