Like many 7.3s, mine leaks a little oil. Not bad enough to cause problems, but annoying and not kosher when driving onto a customer's property. I've resealed the turbo and pedestal, and a few other things, but I have oil in the valley and I believe it s from the HPOP non serviceable plug. I will eventually fix this and probably replace the hoses, but in the mean time I'm looking for a pan of sorts to mount onto the truck to catch any leaks. I've seen someone on YT with one, but wondered what the group here thinks. Any recommendations?
Thanks!
The issue I see with a pan attached to the truck is wind will blow accumulated oil onto everything downstream then you have drips from random places. Another option is placing a pan under the truck after parking. Perhaps a engine diaper would be absorbent enough to catch some of it but the only real solution is fixing the leaks.
Good Point J. As it is right now, the entire drivetrain gets a fine wind swept mist of oil, not enough to drip, but it does keep the rust at bay!
Its one of the those paralysis-by-analysis things with the oil leaks. I know eventually I should replace the oil pan. The manifolds also look very crusty and weak. The truck is a 6 speed, so doing it in frame even with the cab lifted is impossible. So I plan on doing everything when I pull the motor to replace the pan. That includes the oil lines, plugs in the heads, HPOP, oil pan, oil cooler, manifolds, front timing cover seal, crank seal, and rear main. Here is my hesitation: This will take some time to do by myself. And the truck runs so good right now and is as reliable as a stone! I'm afraid of getting elbow deep into this, putting it back together and having constant problems.
Right now, the truck will leave a puddle about the diameter of a coffee cup lid on the ground after 8 hours in place. Not a huge leak, but enough to be noticeable. Maybe you're right though. Maybe I should tackle each piece of this project separately to avoid the "paralysis". Much easier to do in small chunks.
