Antenna

I'm sure many of you have swapped to an aftermarket antenna. Be it for a shorter one or shape(bullet).

Can you give any recommendations for a shorter one without loosing signal strength?

Nope....

The shorter you go, the further away from resonant frequency you go. Even the stock antenna is short physically, but proper length electrically. By winding the wire you can shorten the physical length but you loose proper electrical length.

If you want any distance for reception stick with stock, 88 Mhz length is 2.65 feet and 107 Mhz is 2.2 feet for a proper 1/4 wave antennal straight wire. Since there is a spread of frequencies you choose one length and accept that the others will have losses.

Ok. So I'm my very ignorant knowledge of frequencies, 88-108 is the common FM stations?
And these shorter, even 15", wont receive AM/FM as well as the stock. With mine being 22yr old do they lose strength/conductivity?
To be clear I am not having issues but wanted to upgrade the look

no,
even though the truck is 20+ years old,
AS LONG AS
the coax lead to the antenna has NOT been compromised, it is just fine, as is.

replacing it with RG-58 coax is fool hardy, that has more loss than the stuff that the vehicle maker uses.

if you replace the antenna, get one that is stock length and includes the coax with it, you cannot cut/patch a coax and get away with good reception.

I made my living in the world of radios and microwaves, don't fool with what ain't broke.

that should work, but where is the coax for it???
is the OEM cable/coax still in the truck??

if it has a CB type cable, it won't work as well as it should the cable Capacitance will be too high....

Radio Antennas are NOT tuned to the proper frequencies for FM and AM.
they are just a ROD sticking out of the back of the radio, and the factory cable is special, it has a large inner diameter, and a very thin wire leading to the antenna... the entires system " is tuned " inside the radio....

if the Factory cable is replaced, it must be with one that matches the Factory impedance.

🤷🏻‍♂️
I dunno. lol
All I did was replace the aftermarket antenna to a OEM style long antenna. All I know is in areas where the FM was getting static now it’s alot better.

Good antenna grounding to the fender is a must.

I have a 2019 Kenwood radio on my 2005 Excursion with the original antenna. You may find one of a 2005 F series at the salvage yard.
