I just read this in the recent newsletter: As some Ford Super Duty owners are already painfully aware, replacement taillights for newer models can cost between $4,500-$6,500 each to replace, which is quite a bit of dough. Many owners are discovering this painful fact the hard way, finding those pieces missing and having to take a trip to the dealer, with seemingly little to no recourse. However, there is at least one good way that Super Duty owners can better protect their taillights – not to mention headlights and tailgates, too.
Do these tail lights really cost this much? If so, this is stupid!
Because of the BLIS sensors, yes, they can cost that much, especially if they are also fully LED. There is also usually damage to the truck, since the tailgate must be lowered to remove the tail lights IIRC, and a locked tailgate will likely be damaged to get it down.
On a good note, it falls under your Comprehensive portion of your vehicle's insurance, so you don't have to pay that out of pocket up front - just your deductible and higher premiums until the claim falls off in 5-7 years.

Think I might replace my factory bolts that hold them in with security torx bolts for a little extra protection. I know it’s not perfect but might help some.
I see a full LED taillamp assembly for about $1300. Not sure where this $6000 figure is coming from.
Guessing it has to do with repairing the damage to the tailgate, which would have to be moved in order to access the bolts that hold the tail light housings in place. With locking tailgates, you have to overcome the lock, which means it either has to be torn apart or outright damaged.
